The Electricity Authority’s claim it knew nothing about the decision to scuttle the pulp mill project at Ngawha is an insult to every Northlander who desperately wants the economy to grow.
“When the project was announced hopes were raised, but fear of higher prices in the authority’s proposed price changes led to its demise,” says New Zealand First Leader and Northland MP Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“But the authority says the decision was a surprise. Chief Executive Carl Hansen is quoted by the Northern Advocate saying he was ‘surprised no one got in contact to discuss it’.
“Mr Hansen, and other high paid individuals heading this body, were apparently oblivious to the tidal wave of opposition and comment over the proposed pricing, which made Northland one of the worst affected regions.
“For months organisations and agencies have protested, and most have lodged submissions to the authority raising concerns, including New Zealand First.
“The authority’s reaction now demonstrates just how out of touch it is with the daily living costs for New Zealanders and businesses. They have been unmoved by the fact that some large businesses have stated the higher prices could close them down.
“The authority’s thinking is demonstrated in the fact that foreign-owned Tiwai Point smelter will save $21m on its power costs with the changes while Northlanders, West Coasters, some Aucklanders, King Country and Eastern Bay of Plenty consumers face serious price hikes.”
